Saying Goodbye To My Mother

On Sunday September 24th, the woman who gave me life took her last breath. Aside from grief, there’s also this sense of relief. While of course that’s subject to change, I understand the reason why I’m so calm right now, so at peace, is because it was unquestionably her time to be with the ancestors.

The last weeks prior to my mother’s death have been arduous. She was confined to a bed, perturbed from having to be regularly repositioned, and not eating much. It got to a point where she didn’t want any noise around her – tv, radio, phone, or even other people’s voices.

The lady who I knew was fearless, independent, thoughtful and opinionated was telling me without saying the words, “I’m ready”. After being on this earth for almost 86 years, of course she had my blessing to exit stage left. My harshest critic, my biggest fan, mom had a full journey and leaves quite a legacy. Anyone who met her would tell you, she was something else.

To hear my musings about the details of what I personally experienced as my mother’s life was ending, catch my latest podcast on TheGrio Black Podcast Network.

Defiant Drew Barrymore Keeps Cameras Rolling Despite Hollywood Strikes

Has The E.T., Charlie’s Angels Actress Gone Over To The Dark Side?

SCAB!!!

That’s what some are calling the actress/producer turned daytime talk host since she made the tough decision to launch Season 4 of her eponymous The Drew Barrymore Show. It officially begins Monday September 18th.

What many don’t realize is that much of daytime television is unaffected by the strike between the WGA, SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Association (Warner Bros, Disney, Netflix, Amazon, NBCUniversal, etc..). Syndicated shows from talent such as Sheri Shepard and Jennifer Hudson are going full speed ahead. The same is true for game shows, court, and reality.

On my latest episode of Kevin Ross The Podcast on TheGrio Podcast Network, I add more than my two cents over why Drew Barrymore is being singled out regarding her decision, while others seem to be getting a pass. In fact the hits just keep on coming, as Drew was apparently dropped from hosting an upcoming awards ceremony due to apparently becoming too much of a distraction on this issue.

ALL RISE! The TV Court Judges Are Now In Session

Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to meet most of the dynamic judges that dominate daytime television. In 2023, I am honored to now call the majority of them my colleagues.

This season, Allen Media Group (AMG) will produce and distribute nine court shows featuring some very familiar faces. Joining me are Mablean Ephriam, Lauren Lake, Glenda Hatchett, Cristina Perez, Karen Mills-Francis, Eboni K Williams, Greg Mathis and Marilyn Milian.

The Divine Nine of Small Claims Court

What an exciting time to be sharing space with these savvy, outstanding jurists. Is there competition between us? If there is, it certainly doesn’t feel that way. In fact in my latest podcast on TheGrio, I talk about what it is to be competitive and how competing with one’s self is something we should all be doing more of.

Listen HERE!

And while you’re at it, take a stroll down memory lane with me and catch some photos of some of your favorite judges past and present.

The Cutlers (right) may not be part of the AMG family, but they are my college classmates.

Keith Cutler and I ended up graduating from Morehouse the same year while his now wife Dana was across the street attending Spelman College. We’re always running into each at events, including this 2022 HBCU football classic outside New York. In some cities (LA, Atlanta, Chicago), we’ll be airing on the same stations. Make sure you check your local listing for show times.

Procrastination – Not On My Watch!

For many people, why they can’t either complete a task or wait until the very last minute to do so is something that’s difficult to answer.

While I’ve been laser focused, driven and motivated in many aspects of my life, there are situations where even my own personal struggle with procrastination is all too real.

Defined as the act of of unnecessarily postponing decisions or actions, procrastination in theory can be overcome by breaking down in manageable steps what needs to be done, setting specific and realistic goals, and identifying as well as addressing one’s fears around what’s actually behind the inactivity.

That all sounds good in theory. But does it work?

On my latest Kevin Ross The Podcast episode, I get real about a character flaw I possess and want to change. And by talking about it, hopefully you’re inspired to tackle procrastination in your own life as well.

Free Your Mind, Lizzo!

Grammy Award winning artist Lizzo has had enough!

Singing sensation Lizzo is constantly in the news of late, this time because she’s letting it be known in no uncertain terms that the incessant chatter about being plus-size is emotionally weighing her down.

Whether we’re talking about a musician, actor, model, athlete, influencer or media personality, most would find it difficult to be in the spotlight, especially with any and everybody having something to say about you on social media.

For many, success in today’s world is often accompanied with ridicule, condemnation and people being mean just for sport.

Things were not always this intense.

While I experienced it firsthand on a much smaller scale upon launching a radio career in the 90s, it wasn’t until I started appearing on television regularly — just as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram were gaining in popularity — that I felt appreciated by the majority, but also under attack by a small minority.

All these years later, I’m not only still here, but now have returned to my talk roots.

In my latest podcast (listen here), I share my insight on Lizzo’s situation, mental health, and living one’s purpose.

Check it out, and then let us know what you think!

Yes, Everything Does Happen For A Reason

Most of us are quick to embrace our positive life experiences. And yet the learning, the growth, often comes from painful situations and circumstances that must be overcome.

In back-to-back episodes, Kevin “Boss” Ross reveals what it took for him to land his dream job hosting America’s Court with Judge Ross, and what you can do to be your best self.

Here’s a portion of what you’ll hear:

Three years later, I ran again. By then, I was able to raise more funds and campaign smarter with greater intention, greater focus. And this time – I won!

Only to lose my job seven years later.

Grappling with the tough emotions during that dark period were not easy.”It required therapy, prayer, meditation, humility, and an acceptance of my circumstances.

I had to reinvent myself.

Here’s To Daytime TV Legend Jerry Springer!

I remember hosting a coed baby shower/party for my oldest and the highlight of the evening was playing “The Best of Jerry Springer” tape on the VCR. It was outrageous (and also embarrassingly entertaining).

Over 20 years later when “Judge Jerry” launched in 2019 and his court show began following me on Twitter, I couldn’t help but think how cool it was that Jerry-Jerry-Jerry actually knew who I was.

Despite the tawdry, low brow, exploitative nature of his conflict-based talk show, Mr Springer was an incredible showman who’s decades long career in front of the camera and on the microphone was beyond impressive.

Rest In Peace, Sir. You will certainly be missed!

God Speed.
