It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday

The year was 1995. We were assigned to work together on a community-based, gang prevention task force made up of several individuals. I was the prosecutor. He represented law enforcement.  

We clicked instantly.

I went on to become a judge. He was ultimately promoted to captain with the LA County Sheriff’s Department. Twenty years ago, I officiated his picture perfect, horse-drawn carriage wedding to a fellow sheriff’s deputy. Ten years later, I spoke at his retirement dinner.

Yesterday, I presided over his Celebration of Life Memorial Service.

Devoted husband and family man. Dedicated public servant. The person almost selected to be the bailiff on my court show, America’s Court.  My brother from another mother. Rest In Peace Ruben Gracia. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey.
