This Black Man’s Take on Sharon Osbourne, Formerly of ‘The Talk’

TV and Cable Personality Sharon Osbourne

Despite never having met the woman, I feel a very strong connection to now former “The Talk” host Sharon Osborne. The reasons may surprise you.

Ever since the ruckus MTV series “The Osborne’s” first burst on the scene in early 2002, matriarch Sharon Osbourne has been quite ubiquitous. Her knack for being interesting on camera and hitting her mark on set is undeniable.

Trust me, it’s harder to do than it looks.

Our worlds collided shortly after the birth of my second son. I was a Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge at the time, and one afternoon I received a call from a woman interested in being my talent agent. The pitch was to allow her 90 days to secure an offer for a daytime tv show. She was totally convinced I had the goods to be successful in syndication. Because a very good friend had referred her to me, coupled with the thought of working less and spending more time with now two boys, I told her I’d be open to the possibility.

Like clockwork, I did end up getting an opportunity to be in a court show pilot. The feedback I received was that everyone at Tribune Entertainment and the production company Endemol were beyond thrilled with the end result. The premise was I, as the mediator, would show up at the scene of legal disputes in a sleek, black, Cadillac Escalade driven by my Latino bailiff, and administer mobile justice.

We did not launch as planned in the Fall 2003. Why, you ask?

Ultimately, the higher ups felt The Sharon Osborne Show (also from Tribune Entertainment) was a surer thing. A much smarter, safer bet.

In its first season, this show was cited as the most-viewed series ever on MTV

Yes, almost two decades ago I lost out to Ozzy’s wife! It was a tough pill to swallow. But that’s showbiz, right? And it made sense due to the Osbourne family being on everyone’s lips and radar back then. How do you compete? Of course Sharon was going to take down daytime queen Oprah Winfrey and have ratings shooting through the roof. How could she not be a hit?

The Sharon Osbourne Show lasted one season before eventually getting cancelled.

So, that’s it? That’s my Sharon Osbourne story? Well, not exactly. You see seven years later in 2010, a huge announcement came out. The one time rock manager and mother of three, who’s husband notoriously bit the head off of a bat on stage during a live show performance in Des Moines, was now going to be a panelist on a hyped new CBS network show called The Talk featuring other moms from diverse backgrounds.

Also that fall, the first of what would be many court shows from Byron Allen and Entertainment Studios was launching: ‘America’s Court with Judge Ross’.

Over the last eleven years, until yesterday, Sharon and I both continued appearing on the telly, while most of our contemporaries that began alongside us pretty much faded away. One more interesting fact. My Season 1 show was shot right across from Judge Judy, on the exact same Hollywood sound stage as Season 1 of The Sharon Osborne Show.

and Season 1 of America’s Court were both filmed

Even more ironically, Sharon’s prior dressing room ended up becoming mine.

The dressing room Sharon Osbourne and I shared, a year apart from each other.
I remember the floor having this cool, vintage, black and white check pattern.

See, that’s the funny thing about life. You just have no idea how things will turn out. That said, I’ll leave others to dissect whether Sharon Osbourne is an innocent victim of “cancel culture” or simply a “Comeuppance Karen”.

As an African-American man having worked in sales, marketing, radio, law enforcement, the judicial system, and now in television, I can honestly tell you without question that racism is real. Racial insensitivity exists. White privilege is problematic. Despite that being the case, more and more people are aware of it and are making a sincere effort to not only address it, but resolve conflicts in constructive, equitable ways.

Personally, I’m just glad I never felt any resentment or anger towards Sharon Osbourne’s success. That was her blessing.  God had other plans for me. And I’m very grateful for all of them.

In terms of advice I’d give her moving forward, I’d tell Mrs O that everything happens for a reason. And maybe, just maybe, this current mess you’re in is meant to create a space to convey a message that only you can deliver to those who may otherwise not want to hear it.

Carry on, Sharon. Like always, I be watching your every move!

It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday

The year was 1995. We were assigned to work together on a community-based, gang prevention task force made up of several individuals. I was the prosecutor. He represented law enforcement.

We clicked instantly.

I went on to become a judge. He was ultimately promoted to captain with the LA County Sheriff’s Department. Twenty years ago, I officiated his picture perfect, horse-drawn carriage wedding to a fellow sheriff’s deputy. Ten years later, I spoke at his retirement dinner.

Yesterday, I presided over his Celebration of Life Memorial Service.

Devoted husband and family man. Dedicated public servant. The person almost selected to be the bailiff on my court show, America’s Court.  My brother from another mother. Rest In Peace Ruben Gracia. Thank you for allowing me to be part of your journey.

Job well done, dear friend. Godspeed!

New Film Blindfire Tackles Police Shootings and Race

Will Bishop is a White cop who responds to a violent, domestic hostage call. Next thing you know, the Black man he encounters is dead. Upon learning of the suspect’s innocence, Officer Bishop goes AWOL to unravel what actually took place as the force, the bottle, his estranged wife, and the internal racism that brought him to this point in life must also now be dealt with.

THIS IS BLINDFIRE.

Blindfire’s stellar cast includes Brian Geraghty, Bethany Joy Lenz, Sharon Leal and Wayne Brady

This Los Angeles based independent film was shot in 2019 prior to the explosive Black Lives Matter protests that became an international movement. After a series of disturbing, controversial police shootings and killings in the United States, the world stopped and turned its attention in 2020 to the issue of law enforcement misconduct while simultaneously in the grips of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Judge Kevin Ross holds court with Attorney Smith and Officer Will Bishop,
played by Tom Virtue and Brian Geraghty

Blindfire stars Brian Geraghty, Sharon Leal, Bethany Joy Lenz, Jim Beaver, Chike Okonkwo, Kevin Ross, and Tom Virtue, with a special appearance by Wayne Brady and a breakout performance by Edwina Findley Dickerson. Based on actual events, first time writer and director Mike Nell did an incredible job telling the story.

It was absolutely my pleasure to play the presiding judge in this dramatic thriller.

Big kudos to Kandoo Films’ CEO Howard Barish, co-producer of the acclaimed documentary 13th, for his tireless efforts to bring this movie and its uncomfortable subject matter to the big screen.

Blindfire arrives in theaters Friday November 13th, and On-Demand November 20th.

Flashback Friday: It’s On, Atlanta CW69!

In 2016, I decided after a long absence to attend my alma mater‘s college homecoming.

Morehouse’s Homecoming. The Absolute Best In HBCU Tailgating!

It only made sense to combine business with pleasure while I was in Atlanta, so I scheduled a visit to the local CW affiliate that airs America’s Court. The plan was to do some promotional spots, interviews, etc…, as well as meet the people who worked at the station.

The problem was my arrival and appointment times were too close, we departed late from Los Angeles, and the airline initially lost my luggage. Talk about having to scramble!

I ended up wearing the musty shirt I’d worn on the plane, borrowing a sale executive‘s tie, throwing on a robe that didn’t fit, and kept it moving. Like they say, “The show must go on!” The resulting commercial can be found on my latest @iambossross Instagram page.

My biggest takeaway from that experience? When it comes to handling business, always expect and be prepared for the unexpected. And just in case there’s any doubt when it comes to the Atlanta CW69… IT’S ON!

Black Men In Law School – Then and Now!

At my law school, I was the only black man in 1990 to graduate. Nine years later, this photo was taken in my judge’s chamber. It was my first year on the bench and I was featured in a legal publication.

I’m truly looking forward to seeing what happens to all these black, male, Harvard Law students, who will comprise the prestigious institution’s Graduating Class of 2021.

Happy Birthday Boss Ross!

Today’s my birthday! Given all the things going on in the world right now, my mood is not as celebratory this year.

That said, I’m grateful to be alive, healthy, loved and blessed. Shout out to my fellow Gemini’s and June birthday people.

The struggle continues. Stay safe everyone!

The Corona Chronicles: How Can We Help You, Healthcare Workers?

5752DD7B-EE73-4F86-AA85-1F54506FA1A7

First of all, a huge “THANK YOU!” to the brave men and women in the medical profession giving their all to combat this Corona (not China or Wuhan) virus wreaking worldwide havoc. In addition to following their advice about social distancing, both the public and private sector should be providing everything needed for them to do their jobs. Unfortunately for these doctors, nurses and healthcare workers, that’s not what’s happening.

Healthcare Workers On The Pandemic Frontline Falling Ill

Currently there is a severe shortage of personal protective equipment that these COVID-19 heroes require. Masks and respirators do not generally lend themselves to re-use “because they work by trapping harmful particles inside the mesh of fibers of which they are made,” a federal report says. Federal guidance for limited re-use of N95 respirator masks is here, and also warns about contamination risks.

American Citizens Start Sewing to Offset Lack of Medical Mask Supply

This must end. STAT!  Do your part by contacting elected officials and demanding that resources be directed towards alleviating this unsustainable situation.

PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING A DONATION, or at the very least SIGNING THIS PETITION. Your life, and/or those of someone you love, seriously depends on it.

What “Super Tuesday” Means To Me!

Once I turned 18, declared myself a political science major at Morehouse College, registered to vote and signed up for the draft on the same day at an Atlanta post office, I’ve taken elections very seriously. I’ve ran for office in high school, college, law school and beyond (aka the ”real world”). I‘ve won more than I’ve lost.

E921D009-0EEF-4E81-BFC2-CE01D3DCBB3B

I watch cable news shows religiously. Whether it’s been walking precincts, writing opinion-editorial articles, tv and radio appearances, or hosting podcasts, I‘ve advocated for candidates and issues I believe in.

All that’s to say voting is a BIG deal to me. It’s what makes me feel like I am an American. To those who took the time today, Super Tuesday, to vote in their respective state – BRAVO!

Your voice truly does matter. Thank you!
